If your cat disappears first search your immediate surroundings - your home, garden area then extend your search to adjoining areas. If you fail to find him then follow these simple suggestions. The secret is to tell as many people as you possibly can that you have lost your cat - lots of publicity. Continue your search at night or during the afternoon when it is much quieter.

FIRST: LOOK IN all rooms, all cupboards, boxes, washing machines, cellars, under furniture, every nook and cranny, all sheds, garages and outbuildings, every part of your garden, under hedges, bushes, all vehicles.

THEN: SEARCH local area, fields, busy roads, neighbours' gardens, outbuildings - ask their permission - local halls, public buildings, building sites.

INVOLVE NEIGHBOURS: KNOCK ON DOORS and ask them to search their properties. Type slips with brief description and your telephone number. i.e. Put them through as many letterboxes as possible. Consider doing this a few days / a week later if you don't hear anything. You might extend your area on second trip. (Some owners have done this 3-4 times over a period of weeks and met with success.) Involve schoolchildren and the elderly. They are both very observant. Offer a reward. Ask the milkman, postman, newspaper boys.

AFTER 24 HOURS EXTEND YOUR SEARCH

ADVERTISE: IN THE LOCAL AREA. Make your own "MISSING CAT" posters. You should include a photograph or sketch if you have one. Photocopy at least 20 and put them EVERYWHERE. Put one in your parked car in window facing pavement for passers-by to read. Put one in your house window. Put some into plastic bags (with opening at bottom) and tack to gates, doors and other suitable sites. Put a poster in your local shop, post office, garage and others busy places. Put them in vets and pet shops over a wide area. FURTHER AFIELD your local newspaper, your local radio lost and found.

INFORM: YOUR LOCAL VET and other vets. Remember, if anyone found an injured cat they might not take it to the nearest one. Local animal welfare groups, the CP, RSPCA, PDSA, Blue Cross. Local authority refuse department, who are responsible for animals killed on the roads. The Police.

Never give up hope of finding him, keep searching. repeat many of your searches. the more people who know of your loss the better. don't leave it to long before your initial search.

FINALLY: have your cat micro-chipped, it is reasonably priced and takes just a few minutes at your local vet. this way, when your cat is picked up by or handed in to an animal welfare group, vet or the police he/she will be identified and returned to you.

When your cat does return, do please inform everyone and take down posters etc.
