Animal Aid & Advice (North London) was founded in 1971 by a small number of people in the Holloway area of North London who were concerned about the plight of stray animals. The organization has grown over the years, but we still consider ourselves a 'Grass Roots' group, struggling to cope with the problem of finding homes for the unceasing flood of unwanted and homeless animals. We deal primarily with cats and rabbits but try to help with other animals as well. We have no centre, shelter or office. All the cats are fostered in members' own homes until permanent homes are found. Many of our cats are timid, abused, middle-aged or old - or come into care requiring veterinary attention. We have a no-destruction policy. Consequently, they often stay in our care for some considerable time, thus incurring high costs in foster and veterinary fees. We work hard fund-raising to cover these costs - in particular, we have a charity shop in East Finchley and a charity bookshop in Finsbury Park. We are always grateful to the public for its support, whether given in time, energy or donations of any kind. We are one of the founder members of C4: the Cat Care and Control Consortium (North Thames) comprising Animal Aid & Advice, ARCH, Cats Protection (The Friends of the North London Shelter), Central London RSPCA and SNIP. Membership of the Consortium enables us to co-operate on larger projects, such as the 1999 initiative which led to the free neutering of over 1,000 cats in North London. |
